Think Pink!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and here at Olive we are promoting awareness and celebrating the lives of those who have come away scarred, but always triumphant. So many women have been affected by breast cancer; statistics show that one in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. We all know eight women that we love and can’t imagine our lives without. Please perform your self breast exams each and every month. Spread this awareness and education to women you love; you could, indeed, save their life.

One in eight women or 12.6% of all women will get breast cancer in her lifetime.

Breast cancer risk increases with age and every woman is at risk.

Every 13 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer.

Seventy-seven percent of women with breast cancer are over 50.

Most shockingly and heartbreaking, breast cancer will touch the lives of 40,610 women and men in 2009, according to the American Cancer Society.

Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women.

It is the second most common cause of cancer death in Caucasian, African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women.

Stay tuned because later in the week Olive will make an announcement on how YOU can make a difference fighting for this cause!

The story of the little black dress.

Every woman has a secret weapon in their fashion arsenal - the little black dress. Long considered an essential for every woman’s wardrobe, the LBD was created by none other than Coco Chanel. In 1926, Chanel’s simple and chic black, calf length dress graced the pages of Vogue. The magazine called it Chanel’s Ford”.

Before Chanel, black was only worn by widowers. It was considered distasteful, for black dresses to be worn at celebratory social gatherings. With all the deaths claimed by World War I and the Spanish Influenza, black dresses became more commonplace. With the Great Depression, black dresses became a sign of economic hardships. But in the 1950s, Dior revitalized the little black dress. By the 60s, the LBD was firmly planted on a pedestal with no hint or whisper of ever stepping down. The dress no longer held the sorrowful significance of its dark past. During 70s, 80s and 90s, the little black dress continued its reign.

As sure of its appeal today as Chanel was eighty years ago, the Little Black Dress is a timeless classic. Many designers today are working with richer, textural fabrics like velvet and lace – breathing new life into this forever fashionable tradition.

Who's that lady?

Who is Olive?

We know she must be rather stunning, traipsing around the city in her namesake wear. Is she the college co-ed making her way across campus in a dress and flats? Perhaps she's the busy mother of three running errands and making a statement in the carpool line with her chic shift dress. Or maybe she's the corporate warrior whose fashion sense is far beyond that of the usual pantsuit. But maybe, just maybe, she's a disheartened bride, looking for a gown from years past that is the perfect mix of classic and romance.

Olive is, in many ways, every woman. From the young to the young at heart, she transcends fads. Never a flop, she wears pieces that are reminiscent of an era where it was considered scandalous to leave home without the matching hat, gloves and handbag. She is in one word: timeless. Olive is classic, simple, elegant and romantic. She's also witty, smart, charming and even a bit spunky when the situation calls for it. And she's hoping you'll visit soon! Whether you are in need of a fabulous cocktail dress to stand out at this year's holiday parties or need fresh inspiration in your every day wardrobe, we hope you'll stop by our shop in Buckhead. You just never know who you'll bump into...
